The Dispatch’s Cafe of the Year competition has found a winner in the form of Yummy Tummies on the High Street.
Owner Steve Sleigh was ‘overwhelmed’ by news of the award and thanked loyal customers for posting in their votes.
The cafe, which specialises in fried breakfasts and salads, is run by Steve, his wife Marjorie and daughter Samantha.
He said: “Initially we didn’t believe we were through to the finals. We couldn’t believe it!
“The best thing about it, is that’s based on the customers’ votes - they have done it themselves. It’s a nice feeling.”
Steve credits his success to a strong team: “I think it is because of how good Marjorie and Samantha are. They’re very customer-friendly.
“I hide in the kitchen and do the washing up!”
Steve opened the cafe two and a half years ago after moving from Coalville in Leceistershire, where he worked as a monumental mason, and Marjorie worked in the cafe business.
“We have really enjoyed our time here,” said Steve. “Coalville is a very similar kind of town to Hucknall.
“We have a lot of regulars and we see quite a few new faces as well.
“The fact that it was a postal vote was very satisfying. We never asked anyone to vote, we just left copies of the paper out.
“It means more if people vote for you off their own back.”
Yummy Tummies, at 6A High Street, is open from 7am to 3pm in the week and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
