Amazing adventures in the great outdoors will be on the diary for many families during staycations this summer.

Lose yourself in the wonders of nature by taking a trip around an incredible maze on a glorious  sunny day.

Head for Sherburn, between Scarborough and Malton in North Yorkshire, to sample a new attraction which is opening on July 22. The Great Yorkshire Maze has two mazes, the larger of which is the Yorkshire Rose Maze with more than nine acres of maize plants and more than two miles of paths to challenge the navigation skills. For younger adventurers, there’s the two-acre Scarecrow Mini Maze.

Great Yarmouth unveils its mega maze at Hirst’s Family Fun Park on July 19. This year’s maze has been specially grown with two-metre distance paths to comply with government guidelines.

Hedge mazes

Longleat Maze in Wiltshire is the biggest hedge maze in Britain, boasting more than 16,000 yew trees. A visit to the maze can take from 20 minutes to 90 minutes depending on how good you are at finding your way through it.

The Peace Maze, in Castlewellan Forest Park in County Down, is one of the world’s largest permanent hedge mazes and represemts the path to a peaceful future for Northern Ireland. Visitors can attempt to find their way to a peace bell in the middle of the maze.

Water attraction

Cool down on a scorching summer’s day at Hever Castle’s Water Maze in Kent, but don’t forget to bring a towel!  The maze is on Sixteen Acre Island and is a series of stepping stone walkways poised over water. At intervals, the stones tilt when stood on, sending jets of water to soak the unsuspecting visitor.

All hands on deck at the pirate-themed Cornish Maize Maze at Smeaton Farm, Pillaton, which opens on July 25 with wider paths for distancing.
