Some Tesco sliced chorizo is contaminated with listeria - how to spot affected packets

Supermarket Tesco has recalled specific packets of chorizo slices, due to contamination of listeria monocytogenes, according to the Food Standards Agency.

The contaminated product is Tesco’s 80g 16 pack of Spicy Chorizo Slices, with a use by date of 19 December 2020.

If they have the product in the fridge, Tesco shoppers should check the packet carefully before eating to make sure it isn’t affected by the recall, as the bacteria can cause a number of health issues.

Why is it being recalled?

The product is contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, which is a bacteria that can cause symptoms similar to the flu.

People who ingest the bacteria may experience a high temperature, muscle aches or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

A number of groups are particularly vulnerable to the effects of listeria monocytogenes and may suffer more serious symptoms. These include people over the age of 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, very young children (under one month old) and people with weakened immune systems.

What should I do if I’ve bought the product?

According to the Food Standards Agency, if you have purchased the product do not eat it, but return it to the store it was purchased from for a full refund.

A product recall notice issued by the supermarket said, “Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”
