Becky Downie set sights on World Artistic Gymnastics Championship glory after Commonwealth Games gold medal

Downie, who is the reigning European Champion at uneven bars, posted 14.683 on day one of the two day team competition in Glasgow.

She then recorded 13.200 on the beam following an awkward landing as the five-woman team, including Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold, Kelly Simm and Hannah Whelan, clinched gold with a total score of 167.555.

Delighted Becky (22) said: “I am just really happy with how it went, it has been a great team effort.

“We went in to the competition facing some pressure, but there is always going to be pressure when you compete.

“If anything there was a bit less pressure amongst the team this year.

“We were all well prepared and wanted to go out there and enjoy it. There were some errors with our performance, but we were not expecting things to go perfect.

“When you go out as a team it is a slightly different mentality, you don’t just want to do well for yourself, but for the whole team.

“We fought well as a team and dug deep for each other to get what we wanted. It was great having the home fans behind us cheering us.”

The Hucknall gymnast now believes the Glasgow gold will give Team England the perfect stepping stone as they seek to add World glory to their title at the World Artistic Gymnastic Championships in China this October.

“Winning gold like this gives us a massive confidence boost that we can take into the Worlds,” she added.

“This was a great experience that we will learn from. It is unusual to have two big competitions so close together so things have been a bit hectic, but it just great to be involved in the big championships.

“The Worlds are not too far away now so we will have a week of rest to recuperate mentality and physically and get rid of any injuries picked up.

“Once we have had that rest our attention will turn to preparing for the Worlds.

“For us the Commonwealth Games is a big event that we wanted to enjoy and win, but our main targets is the Worlds.

“It is nice to know that even if we are not at our best we can still win the gold, it has given us a big lift.”

Downie competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics for Great Britain, and was a reserve for the 2012 Summer Olympics team.

At the 2014 European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships, Downie was a member of the British team that won the silver medal in the team final, after qualifying in first place.

She also won the uneven bars title, the second British woman to do so after Beth Tweddle, and finished in fourth place in the balance beam final.
