Big wins in a busy week at Southwell

Three consecutive days of racing at Southwell last week saw some very taking displays, particularly in the feature races.

On Tuesday, the big race was a handicap over a mile and three quarter, saw the Keith Dalgleish-trained Arr’ Kid rout a good field of previous course winners by a heavily eased 12 lengths, which means he remains unbeaten on Fibresand.

From Frost was an impressive maiden winner on the card for trainer Andrew Balding and jockey David Probert and looks a horse to follow in the coming weeks.

Andrew doubled up with Alumina in the last race, a filly who has now won her last five races, three of which have been at Southwell.

Wednesday saw the combination of Eaves and Dalgleish at it again in one of the better races on the card when Sound Advice drew right away with the mile handicap.

The main race of the day, though, was the seven furlong Ladbrokes Handicap, with a total of £21,000 in the prize money pot, with £13,584.90 going to the winner.

Dubai Hills was in the line up hoping to make it course win number eight from just nine starts. But on his first start for David O’Meara he was very disappointing and could only manage fourth behind stablemate Frontier Fighter under Danny Tudhope, who deserved a big win on Fibresand and certainly got it here, fending off Noble Citizen and Greyfriarschorista late on by a length and a half.

Thursday was a day for the young jockeys of the weighing room with Ali Rawlinson again looking very impressive in riding a double, one for his boss Mick Appleby and one for former Grand National winning jockey Richard Guest, riding Scarborough and Alpha Tauri to victory.

Young Rob Fitzpatrick was also among the winners, riding Hot Right Now to record another victory on the Fibresand for trainer Karl Burke.

Trainer Andrew Balding had another easy maiden winner in the shape of Willy Brennan, who definitely is a horse to keep the right side of after his seven length rout here.

Now the clocks have gone forwards, it is nearly time for the Southwell Music Evenings, featuring live music performances after evening race meetings, for more details go to www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk.
