Bassetlaw League round-up: First win for Edwinstowe, New brothers star for Mills

Edwinstowe were able to record their first win of the Bassetlaw League Championship season last weekend, taking 20 points as they bowled Thoresby out for 174.

The home team then made 178-4 sealing the win by six wickets.

Mansfield Hosiery Mills’ innings against Glapwell was embedded by brothers Matt and Tom New that both finished not out with 88 and 89 respectively.

Kamal Manek added 38 of the hosts’ 275-2 as the match provided a winning draw for Mansfield Hosiery Mills with 18 points gained, and Glapwell taking five points for their response of 199-7. John Skinner was the top scorer for the visitors with 84, backed by Mathew Skinner (39), and Danny Bircumshaw (33) who is regularly making the runs.

Matt New completed a good all-round performance with bowling figures of 4-36.

Papplewick’s maximum points gain leaves them continuing to lead the Championship table having made 167-4 to defeat North Wheatley with Leverton, batting highlights this week being 66 not out form Shaharyar Aslam and Tom Bowers’ 31.

Papplewick bowlers had a successful afternoon with 10 North Wheatley wickets falling.

The three bowlers who struck were Richard Hodgkinson (4-37), Justin Brathwaite (3-32) and Charlie Blatherwick (3-33). Wheatley’s Aaron wood remained not out with 42.

Retford responded to Notts and Arnold Amateur’s opening innings of 17-9 with 176 for the loss of only one wicket. They have been close behind the leaders and remain so with the 18 points achieved this week thanks to the bowling of Chandra Kumara with 4-55, his innings of 32 not out, and Mark Bull’s 43.

The 93 not out performance of Retford’s established all-rounder Pascal Broadley was significant in this total.

The match at Central Avenue saw a high-scoring affair end in a draw with Worksop achieving the winning draw with 18 points attained while Clipstone Welfare took a worthwhile 10 points. Worksop’s innings of 226-9 was indebted to Bernhard Beukman’s knock of 133 not out while both Mohamed Anwardeen, with 4-56, and Ranana Jayaneththi, with 4-71, restricted Worksop as Clipstone took maximum bowling points.

In response Clipstone’s Ranana Jayaneththi completed an all-round performance with 34, while Tim Ward was unbeaten with 32, with Bernhard Beukman taking 4-47 for Worksop to ensure they achieved maximum bowling points just as Clipstone had done earlier, with both gaining maximum batting points.

Some strong individual batting performances featured in this week’s Championship game, some players very close to making centuries.

As the weekend saw good weather for all games it is hoped that this good fortune continues and future fixtures can be played without disruption.
