Although Middlesex had the better of their hosts for much of the day, Taylor’s 77 and Steven Mullaney’s unbeaten 56 left Nottinghamshire 194 runs behind Middlesex with six first innings wickets in tact.

Brendan Taylor, who scored over 100 runs in the Championship game against Worcestershire last week, celebrated his second half century in three knocks, off 92 balls.

When bad light came, for the second time in the day, to bring a premature end, Notts had progressed to 180 for 4 with Mullaney 56 not out and Patel 12 not out.

Taylor said; “The momentum was with Middlesex for the last four hours of yesterday so to get those three wickets this morning maybe swung things back in our favour a little bit.

“It’s a pretty good wicket and to keep them to 370 was good. We feela s though we can go out tomorrow, bat for a long time and get past 400 or 450.

“Personally, i enjoyed the first 20 overs of my innings, but then it started to drizzle and get a little bit darker and the ball started swinging around a bit. That made it very challenging but that;s the beauty of the game. It’s nice to be challenge and to fight through certain tough periods.

“I am not happy with getting out for 77. When you get to a score like that, you need to be really hard on yourself and kick on. But I didn’t.

“I think we let them off the hook a bit on the first day with our catching, but we are still right in this game.”
