Cricket legend Amiss in town

Dennis achieved virtually everything in a glittering career with a highest test score of 262 not out versus the West Indies at Kingston, Jamaica, against one of the most fearsome pace attacks the world has ever seen.

He was capped 50 times and averaged 46.30 while in one day internationals he averaged 47.72.

He also made 203 against the West Indies at The Oval in 1976 and scored 11 centuries for England in test matches plus another four in the one day game.

Dennis was one of the Wisden Cricketers of the year in 1975 and was simply a run machine for Warwickshire, scoring 43,423 runs at an average of 42.86 with 102 centuries and 212 fifties.

After retiring as a player in 1987 he was chairman of the cricket committee at Warwickshire and then went on to become chief executive.

Dennis was awarded an honorary doctorate by Birmingham University in 2007 and, along with West Indian Desmond Haynes, he is the only player to have scored a century in both their first and final innings in one day internationals.
