Michael Lumb and Brendan Taylor added 74 for the fourth wicket to lift the home side to within 64 runs of the Division One leaders, on 212-4 at tea.

Taylor had been very watchful at the start of his innings and took 19 deliveries to get off the mark.

But he then blossomed into an array of attacking shots and twice galloped down the track to loft Matt Parkinson’s leg spin away for straight sixes.

Attempting an uppercut against the bowling of Jordan Clark, the former Zimbabwe captain perished just before the interval.

Playing one adventurous shot too many, he picked out Tom Smith at third man for 37.

A couple of trademark cover drives highlighted Lumb’s innings and at tea he was unbeaten on 39 with Samit Patel on one.

Lancashire had come out fighting at the start of the afternoon session, snaring two wickets in the opening few minutes.

Jake Libby was caught behind by wicketkeeper Steven Croft, from the bowling of Neil Wagner, for his lunchtime score of 54.

Greg Smith then perished at the other end, trapped lbw by Kyle Jarvis for 30.
