Samit Patel and Riki Wessels extended their sixth wicket stand to 105 but both fell to Tom Smith as Notts reached lunch on 416 for seven, an overall lead of 140.

Patel had been watchful in taking his overnight score of 51 to 67 but after an hour of play he then feathered Smith into the gloves of wicketkeeper Steven Croft.

Wessels made 62 and was clearly chasing maximum batting points when he nicked to Liam Livingstone at slip, in the 107th over.

Stuart Broad and Brett Hutton each threw the bat from the start of their innings and brought up the 400 with one ball of the 110th over remaining.

Notts have gathered a maximum eight bonus points, whilst Lancashire have secured just four.

At the interval Broad has 36 and Hutton is on 19 not out.
