Rolls Royce win showdown to leapfrog Cuckney to the top of the table

Rolls Royce Leisure roared back to the top of the Nottinghamshire Premier Cricket League table with a stunning 90-run victory over previous leaders Cuckney at Watnall Road on Saturday.

The visitors were shorn of several of their star players, with Richard Stroh, Nick Langford and Billy Root all absent, and, having chosen to bowl first, they dismissed the home side for 217 in the final over.

Skipper Will Butler (3-61) dismissed both openers and David France mopped up the tail taking 3-6 from just 15 balls.

Tom Lungley again starred with 58 for Rolls with Adeel Shafique contributing 41 at the top of the order.

But Cuckney’s batting never really got going and they were bowled out in 36 overs for just 127.

Opener Luke Thomas hit 44 with Ben Phillips (4-31) and Adam Shepherd (4-60) doing most of the damage. The victory leaves Rolls 11 points clear at the top.

The West Indian Cavaliers remain in third after overcoming Clifton by seven wickets at Birchover Park.

The visitors were skittled for just 99 in exactly 40 overs with James Hartley top-scoring with 26. Bilal Shafayat was the leading home bowler taking 5-16 with Ricky Anderson chipping in with 3-31.

The Cavs rushed to their target in less than 21 overs despite some early wickets reducing them to 56-3. Shafayat and Aaron Thomas both ended on 28 not out to see them home.

It continues to be a grim season for Papplewick who remain at the foot of the table after suffering a 94 run defeat to the Nottinghamshire Academy at Lady Bay.

Visiting skipper Jim Rhodes asked the Academy to have first dig but this plan backfired when the county side declared on 293-3 in 47 overs, with hundreds for Sam Kelsall (106) and Sam Wood (113*).

This gave Papplewick 53 overs to survive to avoid defeat, but they were dismissed 21 balls from the relative safety of a drawn game for 199.

Jack McIver (64) and Jamie Peat (39) put on 99 for the second wicket but they lost regular wickets thereafter with spinners Hassan Azad (5-31) and Wood (3-47) doing the damage.

Farnsfield remain in 11th spot, but are now 23 points ahead of Papplewick after a comprehensive nine-wicket win away at Plumtree.

The home side batted first and were dismissed for a paltry 112 with only South African David Bedingham showing any stickability with a well-crafted innings of 55.

Graeme White followed his four wickets in the televised clash between Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire on Friday evening with an excellent return of 6-21 from 10.1 overs.

Farnsfield rushed to their target in just 19.5 overs with Matthew Sisson hitting 80 not out from 69 balls.

The closest game of the day took place at Caythorpe where the home side secured a winning draw against Kimberley.

Run-scoring has been a problem for Kimberley all season, but they got within eight runs of their target for the loss of eight wickets, thanks to 36 from Sam Johnson and 31 not out from Alex King. Jim Hindson led the wicket-takers with figures of 4-66 from 15 overs and Tim Haines was his usual frugal self with 3-19 from his 15-over spell.

The final match saw Mansfield Hosiery Mills notch up their fifth victory of the season with an eight wicket win over Welbeck at Sookholme.

The home side were bowled out for 162 in 47.2 overs with Matt New (4-39) and Matt Wright (3-38) leading the attack.

Jonny Loates top-scored with 60, supported by Andrew Merchant with 30.
