The left-armer took three for 50 as Middlesex were bowled out for 181 on the second day of their Championship opener at Lord’s and by stumps Nottinghamshire had established a lead of 217 at 101 for two.

Gurney said: “We’ve got eight seamers who could all play first-team cricket tomorrow and some youngsters who would be shoe-ins at other counties.

“We showed that today. It’s a good cricket wicket but there is something in the wicket for the bowlers and we exploited that and put ourselves in a strong position.”

Gurney believes the early stages tomorrow is key to their hopes of posting a daunting target for a Middlesex side who have lost one of their key batsmen, Dawid Malan, with a broken finger.

“It’s important to get through that first hour. Middlesex have got a strong seam attack too and the overhead conditions are always a factor at Lord’s. If they take two or three wickets they will be right back in it.

“But if you’d offered us this position at the start of the day we would have taken it. We are in a nice position but we have to make the most of it.”

Middlesex opener Sam Robson believes three or four wickets tomorrow morning could drag his side back into the game.

Robson, who was joint top scorer with 35, said: “It was a tough day for us. We fell short with the bat and had a poor little session with the ball after tea.

“They have got a good seam attack and have bowled well but if we can take three or four wickets in the morning we can give ourselves a chance if we can show some fight and bat well in our second innings.”
