VIDEO: Rain can’t dampen England Legends cricket clash

Showery weather failed to put a dampener on the Greene King England Legends match at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex on Friday.

The T20 game between Welbeck Colliery Cricket Club and a team featuring a galaxy of former Test stars - including Mark Ramprakash and Steve Harmison - was played out in front of around 1,200 spectators.

It was the second Legends’ game to be staged in association with the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) at the Sookholme venue - which hopes to stage a future first class county game.

And once again despite the occasional shower, the day proved to be a huge success and could now become a permanent fixture in the cricketing calendar.

“I know the feedback we’ve had has been fantastic,” said trust and complex manager, Mark Waterfield. “It was great, the legends did a sterling job. The PCA is keen again and all the players enjoyed it. Every one of the players came back with great feedback. The feeling we’ve got is that it will happen again next year.”

Ramprakash and Harmison were joined in the star-studded Legends’ team - which defeated the home side by eight wickets - by the likes of Owais Shah, Alex Tudor, Matthew Maynard and former Nottinghamshire captain, Jason Gallian.

The day also featured a Kwik Cricket Tournament featuring youngsters from across the area as well as a live band and DJ.

Now following the success of the latest Legends’ game, club officials are hoping it is another step closer to convincing Nottinghamshire bosses to play at the picturesque ground.

Added Mark: “We’ve certainly had interest from county. As you know we host Notts Ladies anyway. We had two second team games - a four-dayer and a one-dayer - which were very well received. We’re getting some very good feedback from Notts, “There was a rep there (on Friday) from Notts. He came down and the feedback was extremely positive. It’s 12 years since they have played on an outground, which was at Cleethorpes, and if we get that it will not only be a great coup for the club, but for the county as well.”
