Eastside hold on to down the Giants

Giants men’s lost their opening game of the New Year 73-69 in a close encounter at home to London-based team, Eastside Eagles.

Giants started off well, taking a 19-14 first quarter lead, with Eastside coming out strong in the second quarter, scoring three back-to-back three pointers.

Most of Giants’ points in this quarter came from free throws as Giants’ big man Mark Woodhouse scored close-to-basket shots to keep the game close as Giants remained in the lead by one point at the halfway mark with a 38-37 scoreline.

Another close quarter saw Woodhouse continue to score close-to-basket and mid-range jump shots for Giants while Parish Xavier attacked the basket to convert further points.

Eastside’s Davison then began to shine, scoring nine points in the quarter alone.

With a few refereeing calls going against Mansfield, it led to foul trouble for a few Giants players as Eastside took a 56-53 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter continued to be a close game between both teams, with most points scored from free throws.

Giants’ men travel away to play Worcester Wolves away on Saturday in a must win game, as Worcester are yet to win a game and sit bottom of the table.
