Mansfield Town can and will play much better this season than they did against Cheltenham.
But, overall, it’s easy to forget that it was a decent showing on Saturday, fans and players leaving the stadium with heads down simply due to the Robins’ late equaliser and how unexpected it was.
This side is a new one and still evolving and there was much to admire in the way they set about their task against a big, direct Cheltenham side.

Scott Shearer 7 (It is easy to have a pop at keepers when they are beaten from distance, but it happened to some of the world’s best from free kicks at Euro 2016 and the ball did swerve viciously on Saturday. Shearer made a superb first half save to save his defence after they left him exposed and did well to finish the game in a daze after a clattering collision from Amari Morgan-Smith).
Rhys Bennett 7 (Overall a decent home League debut and produced one crucial perfectly-timed challenge to deny Morgan-Smith an almost certain goal).
George Taft 7 (Good in the air and composed with the ball, already looking a perfect replacement for Ryan Tafazolli. Was adjudged man of the match by the match sponsors).
Kyle Howkins 7 (Looked a little nervy early on against Blackburn in midweek but much more assured on Saturday and won a lot in the air).
Mal Benning 6 (Did little wrong but will have games in which he is much more influential than Saturday).
Lee Collins 7 (The skipper was strong and dominant as holding midfielder and not far behind Hurst in the man of the match stakes).
Mitch Rose 6 (A second goal in as many games as the battling Rose grows in experience, but did allow O’Shaughnessy past him for the equaliser).
Chris Clements 6 (As always some nice moments here and there but needs to take the game more by the scruff of the neck in central midfield with his immense talents.
Kevan Hurst 8 - Along with his dead ball accuracy, Hurst produced a few excellent moments to steal man of the match for me. (Sub 89mins: Darius Henderson 6 – With eight added minutes, his size and experience proved very useful and he put himself about well in a very brief cameo debut at the end).
Danny Rose 7 – A very pleasing home debut, winning a lot of headers for a smaller striker, testing the keeper and can become a perfect foil for Green once they get used to each other (Sub 69mins:Ashley Hemmings 7 – Industrious substitute’s appearance, getting involved at every opportunity).
Matt Green 7 – Stags’ talisman striker is looking ever more like the Green of old prior to his injury and he twice came close to scoring on Saturday, forcing one great save out of Russell Griffiths, as well as his moment of magic that carved out the Mansfield goal.
Subs not used: Jensen, Chapman, Baxendale, Hamilton, McGuire.
