Danny Rose knocking on Stags' first team door again after late winner

Now the much-vaunted summer signing is hoping he can start knocking on the door for a first team start again after his decisive cameo from the bench in the 1-0 victory.

“A last minute winner was brilliant and I think the lads deserved it over the 90 minutes,” he said.

“Every man on the team was brilliant tonight and the lads are buzzing.

“From a personal point of view I thought there was only one winner, and I’m glad I got the winner.”

Rose swooped after keeper Sam Slocombe could only parry a Matt Green shot. The ball was clearly over the line as Slocombe dived to claw out Rose’s follow-up, Chris Clements then making sure as he blasted it over the line a second time which led to some dressing room banter.

“Clem cam over to me and said ‘it’s my goal’, but hopefully it’s gone down as mine,” smiled Rose. “As a striker I needed that one.

“It has been stop-start for me. I started the season in good form and scored one goal in one, but then petered off a bit.

“So it’s good to get a goal and hopefully I can kick on from here. I needed that goal and hopefully there’s many more to come.

“It was a good save then a striker’s instinct to put it into an empty net. He’s tried his best to save it but he’s not got there.

“It was a tight game. I thought there was only going to be one goal in it and I thought it was going to be us. I don’t think they really threatened and we deserved the three points in the end.”

After a frustrating season in which suspension and injury has hampered his chances of securing a regular starting berth, the summer signing from Bury, has enjoyed the first few days under new manager Steve Evans.

“It’s been brilliant,” he said. “Training has been good and it’s rubbing off on the Saturdays now.

“We’ve got six points from two games and hopefully we can take that into Carlisle on Saturday and get maximum points. We will prepare right and give it a good go.

“They are flying at the moment, but we’ll go there full of confidence.

“At home we’ve not really been having the luck. We have come here and not been able to get the three points this season. Three points today will do us the world of good for the team.

“The goal will have hopefully installed a lot of confidence in me and I hope I can get some more.”

Rose has found himself behind top scorer Green and Pat Hoban in the striker stakes in recent weeks and he admitted: “They have been brilliant all season and Pat has started to get his goals.

“It is healthy competition, but it’s going to be a long season we we’ll see how it goes.

“We will just take it step by step and we move onto Carlisle now, then move onto the next one.

“It’s a long season and it’s still the early stages, but the table is starting to take shape and hopefully we will be up there.”
