It was an unforgettable day in more ways than one when HUCKNALL SPORTS UNDER-16S met West Bridgford Harriers in the Third Round of the Notts FA Youth Shield.
For not only did Sports coast to an impressive 7-2 victory, they also lined up with Bridgford to take part in Notts FA’s ‘Football Remembers’ initiative (SEE BACK PAGE).
The sides had a joint team photo taken to honour the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Day truce football match that took place between English and German troops on the frontline during World War One.
As for the action itself, a hat-trick by man-of-the-match James Hallam spearheaded Sports’s triumph against opponents who play a division below them in the Notts Youth League.
Hallam gave them an ideal start, smashing home a lovely through-ball from Jarrod Davies in the fifth minute. And the only fright the locals got in the tie came when Bridgford not only equalised but also squandered the chance to go ahead with a penalty, awarded for handball against skipper James Stenson, that was skied over the bar.
Hallam soon restored Sports’s lead before a one-sided second period in which they ran in five more goals. Mitch Davies drove home a loose ball, Adey Lang skilfully diverted a volley past the ‘keeper, Hallam completed his treble, Jarrod Davies crashed home inside the box and Dante Diriso calmly dispatched number seven.
