Five former Hucknall Town players and the ground-landlords of Bulwell are basking in Notts FA Senior County Cup glory this week -- with the help of an ex-England international.
For Basford United lifted Nottinghamshire non-league football’s biggest prize by beating Clipstone Welfare 5-3 in the final at Mansfield Town’s One Call Stadium.
Basford’s Greenwich Avenue ground, on the outskirts of the Dispatch district, is where The Bulls currently ply their temporary trade. And it is also home for the quintet of ex-Yellows, Reuben Wiggins-Thomas, Daniel Fletcher, Fabian Smith, Ryan Whitehurst and Dion Meikle, who were all in the side to beat Clipstone.
But the limelight on the night was hogged by Lee Hendrie, former Aston Villa midfielder and holder of one England cap back in 1998. The 37-year-old Hendrie played the first half, while his younger brother, Stuart, bagged a hat-trick as Basford raced into a 4-0 lead by the 58th minute.
Plucky Northern Counties East League, First Division champions Clipstone, who play one level below Basford, refused to buckle and cut the deficit to 4-3 with two minutes left. But Wiggins-Thomas netted in injury-time to complete a double for progressive Basford, who were also crowned Midland League champions this term.
