Former Stag and ex Sheffield '˜big two' secretary involved in takeover bid

Derbyshire Times sources say Tony Kenworthy, who played for Sheffield United and the Stags before a short spell managing Grantham, and Dick Chester are involved in the takeover.

Kenworthy clocked up over 450 appearances for the Blades, then moved to Mansfield Town for whom he scored the winning penalty in a Wembley final.

The central defender wrote about his footballing career and time he spent in prison in his autobiography, Blade Heart.

Chester worked as club secretary for both of Sheffield’s ‘big two’ in the 1980s.

The pair are directors of the recently incorporated Tram Sports Limited.

Companies House describes it as an organisation involved in the ‘activities of sports clubs’ and ‘other sports activities.’

Rumours of a takeover were fuelled by the sight of three men conducting what appeared to be a valuation exercise at the Proact late last week.

Spireites owner Dave Allen is known to make financial contributions in the latter stages of each month to bridge the funding deficit, which would make this a particularly sensitive time for any takeover.

And first team boss Martin Allen is unable to finish off his squad building, saying earlier today that his recruitment plans are ‘on hold’ for a few days.

Chesterfield director Ashley Carson declined to comment on the potential takeover.
