Glapwell sunk by late two-goal salvo

Two goals in the final 15 minutes condemned Glapwell, who had the better chances, to a 2-0 Central Midlands League North Division defeat at Brodsworth Welfare.

It looked like they would be able to continue their recent good form as they had several chances in the first period, three of which fell to Andrei Pykett with two not far off target from long range.

Jordan Jones headed just wide at the back post before both Jones and Jake Wharton saw goalbound efforts blocked.

The best the home side could muster in the first half was a long-range effort for Luke Kelly ,which was well wide, while Dan Smith fired straight at Ryan Hopkins.

Jordan Jones then brought a good save out of Brodsworth keeper Dominc Senior on the stroke of half-time.

Glapwell continued to look the more likely after half-time, albeit without looking as dangerous as they did in the first half, though they were denied a penalty when Jones appeared to be hauled down in the area.

Instead, the opening goal of the game fell to Brodsworth on 76 minutes when an almighty scramble occurred on the goal line following a corner and, with bodies all over the place, Glapwell looked like they had done enough to clear, but the assistant referee flagged for the goal.

Glapwell could have levelled when Ash Barber played in Philip Robb, who lifted his shot over the bar from 12 yards.

There was an unsavoury moment towards the end when Brodsworth’s Mel Cotton appeared to throw a punch at Tom Robley.

However, he escaped punishment when the referee, no more than five yards away, missed the incident, and further salt was rubbed into the wounds when Robley brought down Cotton in the area with the penalty being tucked away with the final kick of the game.
