The pleasing start to HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE’S new challenge in the Central Midlands League continued last Saturday when they eased into the Second Round of the league cup.
Rolls were pitted against Rotherham visitors Phoenix, who are struggling near the foot of the North Division.
And after a slipshod opening half, a burst of goals in the first 17 minutes of the second period -- including a couple of own goals -- set up a 3-0 victory.
The big difference between the two halves was that Rolls quickened the tempo and attacked with pace.
Jack Allen opened the scoring, finishing coolly in a one-on-one with the ‘keeper after his run had been picked out by man-of-the-match Jack Matthews.
Nine minutes later, a fine interchange of passing between Chay Bettridge and Jack James led to a cross by stand-in captain Greg Conn being headed into his own net by Phoenix defender Carl Longmore.
And a further seven minutes on, Carl Garlick also nodded past his own ‘keeper when trying to clear a dangerous ball into the area by Kane Matthews.
Rolls would have added more goals but for good saves to deny Jack Allen, Jack Smith and substitute Harry Allen.
Kane Matthews had also gone close in the first half. But equally, the locals nearly paid the price for failing to make their possession count.
Twice in a matter of minutes, Phoenix striker Sam Hadfield found space in the box. On the first occasion, he headed wide from eight yards, and then his effort was well saved at his near post by goalkeeper Jack Walker.
