A dramatic penalty-shootout capped a fantastic giantkilling upset by HUCKNALL WARRIORS UNDER-13S in the First Round of the Young Elizabethan League’s Saturday Cup.
Tackling Wilford Mavericks, who play a division higher, Warriors played their part in an entertaining tie that finished 2-2 at the end of extra-time, necessitating a shootout.
The Hucknall side scored four of their five spot-kicks, courtesy of Lewis Radford, Jude Preece, Ryan Walton and Curtis Rigley, while heroic goalkeeper David Hurry made two crucial saves to earn a 4-3 win and stretch the team’s impressive run of consecutive victories to eight.
Warriors had opened the scoring back in the seventh minute when Jack Bradley converted a through ball from Kian Williams.
And after Mavericks had levelled eight minutes into the second half, Camryn Walker restored the lead with a blistering shot that rocketed into the net.
However, the home side equalised again almost immediately and despite further chances at both ends, not even a frenetic 20-minute period of extra-time could split the two sides, with both producing some resolute defending.
