On the day their social club, Talk Of The Town, was awarded a five-star food and hygiene rating, HUCKNALL TOWN were hoping for a five-star performance on the pitch.
However, a goal in the third minute of injury-time robbed them of victory at home to Real United in the Central Mislands League’s South Division and they had to be content with a 1-1 draw.
Midfielder Leon Aikman had finally broken the game’s deadlock deep into the second half when he forced the ball over the line at the back post after a neat pass-and-move with Montell Gatland, who produced a hard-working man-of-the-match display in a makeshift lone striker’s role.
But a sting in the tail followed because Town failed to clear their lines in a crowded box, allowing plucky Real’s Jamie Cross to level.
It was extremely frustrating for The Yellows, who again paid the price for missed chances, Gatland, Aikman, Nathan Robinson, Aaron Evans and Cameron Davidson all squandered openings, although ironically, the best opportunity of all was somehow blazed wide by the visitors.
Said boss Andy Graves: “I couldn’t fault the effort, which was the response I hoped for after the Eastwood defeat. But we just cannot finish sides off.”
