Linby dumped out of cup despite dominating

Linby were knocked out of the CML League Cup at the first round stage following a 2-1 defeat at Sutton Rovers.

The first half was completely dominated by Linby, but they were unable to find a way past Sutton’s debutant goalkeeper Oliver Clark , who was in inspired form.

The chances came and went for Linby, on 12 minutes, Charlie Finch’s header from a Brad Newby corner was cleared off the line.

Owen Everton’s shot from the edge of the area was well saved by Clark on 15 minutes, before he saved brilliantly from Sean Craven three minutes later.

With the rain by now battering down , The home side took the lead on 58 mins, with their first attempt on target when Connor Slack scored with the aid of the crossbar.

Linby made changes, with live wire Kayne McKenna, veteran Matt Peberday and George Holloway, all coming on .

It was McKenna who caught the eye, causing Rovers all sorts of problems , with his pace and ability.

Tom Hilton blazed over on 72mins after McKenna’s run and cross created an opening.

McKenna was inches away two minutes later after another good run, before the sub hit the bar with a diving header on 77 minutes.

But Linby finally got their reward after 78 minutes when McKenna finished after a 1-2 with Craven.

By now there looked only one winner and McKenna was inches wide from a winner with eight minutes to go.

Craven had a shot well saved on 84 minutes as extra-time loomed.

But on 90mins, Rovers caught Linby on the counter attack , and with only their second attempt on goal Ryan Walker scored the winner.

Linby still had one more chance with a Jack James header well saved by Clark.

With news coming through that the Notts FA have cancelled all their County Cup Competitions for this season, Linby are now left to concentrate on the league.
