Local derbies league is in Hucknall Town’s hands

TWO games to go in the local derbies league.
TWO games to go in the local derbies league.

The exciting mini-league exclusive to Dispatch district football will be settled at two Hucknall Town matches over the next month.

The unofficial Dispatch Derby Stakes focuses on the 12 derbies between the big four local clubs that are spicing up the Central Midlands League’s South Division this season.

Even though the season has barely reached the halfway stage, nine of the games have already been played.

And Town will be crowned ‘champions’ if they beat Linby Colliery Welfare at Watnall Road this Saturday and then avoid defeat at home to Bulwell in what will effectively be the league’s decider on Saturday 24th January.

The Yellows have already completed a derby double over Hucknall Rolls Leisure -- 4-1 at home and 5-1 away -- and they have also hammered Bulwell 4-0 away. Their only blip came in a 4-0 reverse at Linby.

However, that has been Linby’s only taste of local-derby glory. They have twice lost 3-2 to Bulwell and also an away clash with and Rolls (3-0).

The latter match was Rolls’s sole success, although they did hold Bulwell to a 1-1 draw and also beat The Bulls 3-2 in a Notts FA Senior County Cup tie, which doesn’t count for the purposes of this league.

After the Town v Linby and Town v Bulwell games, just one derby remains to be played -- Linby v Rolls on a date to be arranged.
