David Flitcroft believes Carlisle United manager John Sheridan is a born winner and is not surprised how well the Cumbrians have started the new campaign.

United arrive at the One Call Stadium tomorrow (3pm) with three League Two wins on the bounce under their belts, despite huge summer upheaval at the club and budget cuts.

“They have made a great start,” said Flitcroft. “ John Sheridan has been highly successful over the last couple of years and over his career.

“He is a born winner and has taken that into his management. He has been a fantastic manager.

“He had a tough job at Fleetwood, then had that taken away from him.

“Now he’s gone to Carlisle and we know it will be a tough game.”

He added: “John’s team are always committed and always play with a style. They will want to come here and perform on a very good pitch.

“We have to negate that and concentrate on what we are good at – creating chances, taking risks and being aggressive in everything we do.”

Stags remain unbeaten in the League, but have only won their opening game so far, drawing the next four, despite having created enough chances to win them.

“Our performances and results at home have been encouraging and we are now really looking forward, after a glut of away games, to playing in front of our supporters and really giving them what they want,” said Flitcroft.

“We just need to be more clinical and ruthless in that last third – that’s the bit that’s missing. When we get that right, we’re a match for anyone and a very good football team.

“We need to start turning the draws into wins. We need to put teams to the swords with our dominance. We have to turn it into three points.

“Creating 14/15 chances a game and not getting three points is clearly now something that needs to improve.”
