Mansfield Town boss delighted to see Krystian Pearce called up by Barbados

The Mansfield Town manager was also happy for Omari Sterling-James and Ryan Sweeney, who have both also had call-ups that have seen next weekend’s scheduled game at Crewe postponed.

However, the Stags boss warned such things do have an effect down the line for the club.

Pearce will represent Barbados for their CONCACAF Nations League qualifier against Guyana on 6th September.

In the same competition, Sterling-James has been selected by St Kitts to play against Puerto Rico three days later while Republic of Ireland U21s have also called up defender Ryan Sweeney, on loan from Stoke, for their UEFA U21s qualifiers versus Kosovo on 7th September and Germany on 11th September.

Flitcroft smiled: “It is great for the players and I am delighted for them – certainly for Pearcey. I will have to go over and watch that one and get my trunks ready!

“He is chuffed with it. At 28 he didn’t realise he’d get a call-up to go and play for his country.

“As you get more experienced you appreciate moments in football more. “Sometimes as a young player you take them for granted. Between 18 and 24 football time is the quickest time ever.

“You are only in it a short time so get the most out of it – I tell young players all the time.”

He added: “Krystian is committed to football and now has the opportunity for international experience.

“Omari. has not played a lot of football but this is a chance for him to have a great experience.

“Sweens is a player whose potential is huge. It’s massive. Could he become a full international? Absolutely. He has got the work ethic and ability to do that.

“He has the experience from playing in the younger age groups to become the full international, which any player should strike for.”

However, Flitcroft then warned: “When you start looking at games being called off you plan them into a schedule.

“The next potential international weekend is potentially the 1pm kick-off against Grimsby and our revenue is matchday.

“It’s different to the Premiership as they sometimes don’t need a full stadium to pay for things. TV rights and sponsorship almost pays for the squad. It’s different at our level.

“I am chuffed for the players, but it does have a knock-on effect somewhere down the line at any football club. There is certainly impact to it.”
