Howell returned to Paul Cox’s starting side in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Northampton in place of the injured Chris Clements for his first start since 10th August.

And, after a solid showing, Howell says he hopes he has done enough to show Paul Cox that he warrants a starting role against fierce local rivals Chesterfield.

“It is not nice when somebody gets injured, but I am happy to be back in the team,” he said.

“It is a long season and the whole squad is going to get a chance eventually.

“Once you get your chance you have got to show the boss that you are worth keeping it. There is good competition in the squad and that helps keep you on your toes.

“As a player you want to play week in week out. We are all buzzing and cannot wait for the game on Saturday.”

Selection for a starting place would be a massive confidence boost for the former Alfreton star, who says he is happy with how he has handled the step up in division.

“It is a fresh challenge for me plaing in League Two. I feel that I have adjusted well to the challenge and that things are going well.

“I am confident in my ability. You have to be confident in what you do when you are called upon, there is no hiding place in League Two.”

Mansfield will be roared on by just under two thousand away fans as they battle to become the first team this season to avoid defeat at The Proact Stadium.
