However, the Stags have said that while not surprised after his fine year in the hot seat, Murray is under contract and they are confident he will not be on the move.

The Saddlers, currently sitting fourth, are looking to replace Dean Smith, who left the club on Monday to take charge at Brentford.

Murray, 34, in his first full season in charge of the Stags, signed a contract extension in October.

A club statement today said: “The club is not surprised by the rumoured interest. It reflects the huge strides which have been made under his management.

“Adam is under contract with the club and we are confident that he will continue to build on the work which he has started for many more years to come.”

It has been just over a year since Murray took over as boss from Paul Cox, initially on a caretaker basis. Having kept a poor side up last season, a summer makeover has seen him build a side that currently sits in the League Two play-off zone.

Current coach John Ward is 5/2 favourite with the bookmakers to get the job on a full-time basis with recently axed Swindon boss Mark Cooper and Sean O’Driscoll both heavily linked.

Billy Davies and Brian McDermott have not ruled themselves out of the vacancy, while ex-Newcastle boss John Carver is a 25/1 shot.

BetVictor have Murray at 20/1 to be offered the job.
