On a filthy cold, wet Tuesday night on Canvey Island, Stags dug in deep to ensure they wouldn’t join the list of giantkillings with an Ollie Palmer goal enough to see them through to a second round clash at Cambridge United.

“I knew exactly what kind of game this was going to be. I knew the atmosphere that would be created, I knew the state of the pitch and the surroundings and I had to make sure the boys were ready for that.

“In the first half I think we got tied up between the two styles we have been playing. I knew that would happen at some stage as the players have had a lot of information gone in this week. So we caused ourselves problems.

“We tweaked it in the second half a bit and I gave them a bit of guidance how to go out and win the game. The lads gave us everything second half and I am proud of them.

“The first half wasn’t good enough but in the second half at times you saw the product we are trying to create, moving the ball quickly and getting it to the wide players to cause trouble.”

Murray added: “Concord were a credit to their club and management team. They were just incredible and gave absolutely everything and pushed us all the way.

“It was end to end and exciting for the neutral, and a bit too open for me at times.

“But I am enjoying this and I am the proudest man in the world right now. This is massive for me.”
