Fans would have been worried by the sight of the big defender limping off just after half-time, but boss Adam Murray said: “It was just a knock and we were about to make the substitutions anyway.

Former Stag Ross Dyer punished an early mistake by keeper Scott Shearer to put Tamworth ahead for a sweet finish by Nathan Thomas on 55 minutes to level.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the game,” said Murray. “But it took us 43 minutes to get going.

“They had a bit of a rollicking at half-time. These pre-season friendly games are a pain in the backside in some ways as there are not three points on it.

“I know as a player that as much as you want to do it, if there aren’t three points on it then it’s harder and I thought we went through the motions in the first half.

“We painted certain pictures with the ball that looked pretty but were not effective.

“I thought our work rate and tempo were not quick enough in the first half.

“All credit to the boys, they upped the tempo in the first 20 minutes of the second half before we made the changes and we should have scored two or three.

“Then we made the changes and I thought the young boys did well. Overall I was very pleased with the afternoon.”
