Stags boss Paul Cox has striker replacement lined-up for Matt Green

Mansfield Town look set to bring in a replacement for Matt Green this week.

Manager Paul Cox confirmed tonight that he had a League One striker lined-up and he could be signed early in the week.

“We have had an offer accepted by a League One club and we hope we can get him in early this week,” said Cox.

“He is in the Matt Green mould and fits our criteria. He scored goals in League One last season and we are confident he can score goals for us.”

Cox was pleased with his side’s display in this afternoon’s 1-0 home pre-season friendly defeat by Championship neighbours Nottingham Forest.

A first minute error by keeper Alan Marriott gifted Forest the only goal on a red hot afternoon.

Cox said: “I thought it was a bit like the Liverpool game.

“We have them too much respect in the first half. That’s not our game. We are all about getting into people’s faces, closing down, and not letting them dictate play.

“But we made more of a game of it in the second half.

“What was pleasing was our shape looked good, we worked their keeper and had a goal disallowed for offside by a very fine line.

“It must have been 100 degrees at pitch level so credit to both sides for an entertaining game that was competitive for a pre-season game.

“Forest are a good side with a very good experienced manager and we are grateful to Billy Davies for bringing down a really strong side.”
