Stevenson savours special goal for Stags at Pompey

Lee Stevenson enjoyed his fantastic overhead finish in front of the home fans in Stags’ 1-1 draw at Portsmouth yesterday.

“That was one for the scrapbook, that one,” he smiled.

“We started the second half brilliantly and Westy (Darryl Westlake) put a great ball across.

“I don’t know what he was doing up there, but JJ (James Jennings) then got in a great header back across goal.

“It went behind me but I have just put my leg out for an overhead kick and it’s gone in the top corner.

“It’s always nice to score goals, but to get one like that at a place like that was fantastic really.”

He added: “Before the game we’d have taken a point from Fratton Park. But to come in 0-0 at half-time and well in the game and then start the second half like we did, the lads are disappointed.

“Anyone involved in the game will tell you teams will always have spells. They stuck three or four up front and went hell for leather.

“We had to defend for our lives again like we did at Exeter, but couldn’t hold on this time.

“It was a great effort from the travelling supporters today. They stuck with us.”
