The former Hereford man joined rivals Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee after Spireites upped their initial bid for the player.
It ended a 15-month stay for the former Hereford man, who was named in last season’s Sky Bet League Two Team of the Year and would have been a free agent next summer.
Manager Paul Cox then moved quickly to sign former Wigan Athletic striker Rakish Bingham, a player that has impressed on trial at the club in recent weeks, .
The 20-year-old could now make his debut in tomorrow night’s JPT clash with local rivals Notts County.
Speaking moments after the Clucas transfer was announced, fans took to twitter to have their say.
Stephen Wells said: “he doesnt fit in cox’s ridiculous system he plays, hes a left winger, best we get some money to get a player for our system.”
Scott Powell added: “was always going to happen, people are whinging it’s on deadline day but money talks in lower league football!”
Darren Walsh wrote: “No surprise was also going to go. Just a shame it’s chesterfield.”
Mark Plump wrote: “Let’s face it he hasn’t been done much for us for a few months and he will fit into their system. Best of luck Sam.”
Danny Catling added: “Absolutely ridiculous, would rather we have someone in before selling him and to our rivals. It is ridiculous!!”
Adam Dowsing said: “no too bothered that he’s gone as long as we keep Taff. Bit of a kick in the teeth that it’s to them though.”
Russ Hallam added: “It’s only good business if he’s replaced. The squad is threadbare and majorly lacking in the creative department.”
Craig Norwood wrote: “If we only had a manager who played football we’d have got more out of him, no use lumping it to him.”
Colin Perry said: “Some former #stags greats have moved over the M1 before. Sorry Clucas has left; could turn out to be good business though.”
ChrisW4421 added: “Shows how brain washed to the rubbish under Cox we have got use to that we don’t recognise quality anymore.”
