Is Matt Green about to get a second chance at Championship football?

Championship new boys Bolton Wanderers are said to be one of three clubs in the chase for Mansfield Town legend Matt Green.

The prolific goalscorer, released by the Stags last week, is also reputed to be on the wanted list at Portsmouth and Plymouth Argyle, who have both just been promoted to League One, as well as other unnamed clubs.

Green, 30, said: “I’ve had offers from League Two to the Championship. I offer goals.

“It’s time to move but will forever be grateful to MTFC and the owners that I have scored 86 goals.”

Bolton are reported to be favourites and it would be a second chance for Green to shine in the Championship after his move to Birmingham City ended up in serious injury four years ago.

Although top scorer for the last two years, Green’s goalscoring had gone of the boil – he hit 13 in 2016/17 – but he had been inundated by tributes and good wishes by Stags fans grateful for his time at the club.

“I am very humbled and thankful for all the lovely messages,” he said on Facebook.

“John Radford and Carolyn Radford have looked after me and always kept to their word.

“I really have no doubt that MTFC will gain promotion and Steve Evans deserves all the backing from the fans.

“Again thank you for all your support over the years. Now it’s time to enjoy the summer and look forward to a bright future.”
