The relegated Cobblers have only won once but only trail Stags by a point and Bowditch said: “It is easy to look at the table and start thinking ‘who can we catch?’, but I think that is how we have to be, and how everybody has to be around the club.

“We have to look at who we can start catching because we know individually we are good enough, but we need to get over this mental block and start putting some wins together.

“You can see already some of the quality we have in the team, and we should be fine.”

He added: “We need to improve everywhere. We had a great clean sheet last weekend, but we have to improve everywhere, that is the truth.

“If we are going to go and start beating teams convincingly, then we need to take what I see in training day, day out, and take that into games.

“We also need to not get so downhearted if something doesn’t quite go our way.

“We have to keep going, keep plugging away and keep that positivity, because if you start going the other way, you are never going to get better.”

Northampton are yet to win at home, but Bowditch said: “I wouldn’t say is is easier to play away from home.

“We played well at Colchester and deserved the win, and that was off the back of them coming off a fantastic run, which just goes to show we can go to places and beat these teams.

“We start with Mansfield now, and let’s hope we can get the three points.”
