Plucky underdogs HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE REZSERVES came within a whisker of a major upset in the Notts FA Saturday Intermediate County Cup.

Rolls faced a mighty task at home to a Cotgrave side who not only play a level above them in the Notts Senior League but also sit top of that Senior Division.

Yet despite missing players who were cup-tied or unavailable, they led 2-1 until the 79th minute before going down 3-2 to a goal just three minutes from time scored by Jamie Kirkby.

Cotgrave had also taken the lead back in the 14th minute when Ryan Thorpe took advantage of Rolls failing to clear their lines. But the battling home side deservedly levelled on the half-hour when captain-for-the-day Andy Start dispatched a penalty, awarded for a foul on Matt Rick.

And they took the lead 15 minutes into the second period when Rick outpaced the defence for a cross that was turned into his own net by a visiting defender.

Only when Rolls tired in the closing stages of the tie did Cotgrave get on top, equalising when Adam Gray converted a cross to the far post by Kirkby and then breaking Rolls hearts with their winner.
