The Premier Division leaders EMPIRE were on the receiving end of a major upset in the quarter-finals of the Edwin Varney Senior Cup in the NOTTS SUNDAY COMBINATION.

For the Bulwell side, who head the top flight by ten clear points, were knocked out by First Division promotion-chasers FC Meadows in a 2-1 defeat.

All seemed to be going to plan for Empire when Bulwell striker Conor Carter put them in front in the 25th minute. But Meadows turned it round in the second half.

After a penalty, converted by Ryan McCormack, had brought the scores level on the hour, Micky Grinnion bagged a dramatic winner for the home side with only five minutes remaining.

At least Empire received a consolatory tonic with news that their main rivals in the Premier Division championship race, second-placed Blacks Head, had been beaten.

Fellow Bulwell outfit MELLISH did the damage in a 4-2 success, earned by goals from Ashley Chadwick (2), Ricky Clayton and Ryan Bingham.

Mellish are not out of the title equation themselves because although they remain 13 points behind Empire, they have five matches in hand.

Meanwhile, in the Premier Division’s Chairman’s Cup, another Bulwell side, LORD NELSON, collected a welcome 4-0 win away to bottom-of-the-table Beechdale.
