Rainworth MW begin search for new manager

The Wrens resigned from the Evo-Stik League at the end of the 2014-15 season, despite the best efforts of the management duo, and requested a voluntary move to the more affordable Step 5 of the National Leagues System, where they hope to be competitive on a reduced budget.

Robinson and his then managerial partner Gary Sucharewycz had stepped in after half a dozen games had yielded just one point and a number of heavy defeats at the start of 2014-15, and they miraculously brought in an almost entirely new squad within hours of taking the post, leading to a significant improvement in results.

And when, soon afterwards, Sucharewycz had to quit because of the pressures of a new day job, he was replaced by Knapper.

There has, however, been a high turnover of players, including several youngsters, and the early promise was never quite fulfilled as too many points were subsequently dropped which should have been picked up, culminating in the Wrens finishing in a relegation position.

While a reprieve from relegation would have been likely, club officials felt, despite efforts by the management to persuade them otherwise, that continuing Step 4 football was financially unsustainable without risking going into debt.

The club are still awaiting news of which league they will play in next season, but they hope and expect that it will be the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Chairman Les Lee paid tribute to the departing managers, saying: “I would like to thank them very much for their efforts for Rainworth MW.

“They came into the club when it was at a very low ebb, and came so close to turning it round, but even if we had avoided a relegation spot we would still have had to make the difficult decision to drop anyway.

“After initially resigning following the news that the club had asked for a voluntary demotion they agreed to stay on, at least to the end of the season, and were then prepared to continue for next season.

“But there was too much leeway between the budget they requested and our own financial projection, so we agreed to part company.

“At the time of writing it is not yet known in which league we will be competing but it will be at Step 5, with the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division being the one of choice.”

Applicants for the managerial post are invited. A requirement for any candidate, is that they must have experience at this level, however others with a proven record of developing young talent may be considered.
