Happy HUCKNALL ROLLS LEISURE were suddenly propelled into second place in the Notts Senior League, Senior Division table after the shock resignation of Clifton.
The entire table had to be re-calculated to expunge Clifton’s 21 results. And while some sides had as many as six points taken off them, Rolls were docked only one because they lost and drew their two Clifton games.
The upshot was that Jez Corthorn and Paul Jordan’s side found themselves in the runners-up slot, with only champions-elect Bulwell above them.
And they duly celebrated with a 5-0 spanking of Selston that suggested they could well hold on to second in their final four games of the campaign.
Selston were a pale shadow of the side that beat the locals earlier in the season. But Rolls dominated to such an extent that the scoreline could have been even bigger had rampant striker Kane Matthews not limped off with a bad hamstring-injury on the half-hour.
Matthews had already scored twice in the first ten minutes before teeing up a tap-in for Greg Conn.
Matthews’s replacement, Chay Bettridge, slammed home number four on 40 and Conn completed the scoring in the last minute, nodding in a smashed effort by Billy Brooks.
The man-of-the-match award went to Jack James, who ran the show in midfield with Jack Matthews.
ROLLS LINE-UP (4-4-2): Pearson J./ Hulme S., Duncan, Short, Tolley/ Conn, Matthews J.,James, Bainbridge/ Allen J., Matthews K. Subs: Bettridge (for Matthews K. 30), Brooks (for Bainbridge 68).
