Samworth footballers do the double

Samworth Church Academy’s Year 8 footballers have become the Mansfield Schools Town Cup winners and the Gordon Mills County Cup winners, the first team at Samworth Church Academy to hold both titles.

Stephen Thompson, a teacher at the Academy who manages the team said they had pushed through to the next level after only losing one game in all of the competitions, culminating in being crowned Town and County Champions, much to the Academy’s delight.

“The year 8 football team have had a fantastic season, building on their previous success in the Mansfield Schools Town Cup.

“These young stars have shown tremendous teamwork, leadership and technique alongside an abundance of ability, determination and spirit. They show fantastic potential for the future both on and off the pitch.”

But Mr Thompson said the team are not resting on their laurels. With hard work he now hopes that the team can build on their success and enjoy a good National Cup run next season.

“They are a pleasure to manage and thoroughly deserve the success they have achieved. I have no doubt that they will continue to reap success and will be a team to watch,” he added.

Captain George Leeson said it had been a great experience for the team.

“We have really enjoyed this season, doing the double was amazing,” he said. “We have got our sights set on defending our trophies and going for the national cup next year.”
