Scoreline harsh on youthful Teversal

Even if the scoreline was a little harsh on the visitors, Lewis Saxby’s youthful Teversal could have few complaints about their 4-1 defeat at a solid-looking Worsbrough Bridge Athletic in NCEL Division One on Saturday.

Teversal had travelled to Barnsley hoping to add to an impressive midweek performance at Hall Road Rangers, when an injury time penalty denied the Tevie Boys a well-deserved three points in a 1-1 draw.

But, kicking up the slope, they made a slow start which handed the initiative to the host who were rewarded after just 10 minutes with the lead.

A neat move saw a decisive pass send Dean Shirt clear and, with Ryan Brooks racing off his line, the striker lifted a lob over the keeper to finish with aplomb.

Only two minutes later Teversal were dealt another blow when influential defender Jordan Schofield was lost due to a dead leg after making a superb challenge to deny another attempt on goal.

On 15 minutes Teversal skipper Dickinson found the time and space to fire off an effort from 20 yards that had Oxley caught flat footed in the home goal, but unfortunately for Teversal the effort just went the wrong side of the far post.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 as Poskit and White exposed the Teversal left flank with the latter whipping in a cross that invited Shirt to head home his second of the afternoon.

Just after that the striker was one of a number of Worsbrough players who had efforts saved or blocked from a ping pong corner in what turned out to be Shirt’s last involvement with him also having to leave the pitch due to injury.

Brooks pulled off a stunning save to keep his side in the game as the half-time break neared, but it would be remiss to not mention the equally impressive build-up play by the home side with Phillips and Podmore combining to find White, who had the effort saved.

Teversal looked more threatening after the break and like their hosts were rewarded with Dickinson and Radford combining before Pearson managed to get the luck of a ricochet off a Worbrough defender before clinically pulling a goal back on 55 minutes.

The visitors could have levelled when Dickinson kept the ball for what seemed like an age before finding Newton, who spread the ball wide to Harcourt to deliver an inviting cross for Starbuck who headed the effort wide of the target.

On the hour mark Worsbrough regained their two goal lead in a lucky but costly manner.

Stuart Mark mis-hit his cross that looped over Brooks with Phillips sliding in at the back stick to glide the ball home, but a collision with the post saw him sustain an injury that would see the substitute substituted.

Teversal pushed and should be applauded for their never-say-die attitude, and with 15 minutes remaining Newton’s free kick from out on the left wing found a powerfully headed effort by Pearson superbly saved by Oxley.

But with the Tevie Boys pushing and chasing the game they left themselves open to the break, and that was to be the source of the final nail in the coffin when in the final minute Podmore broke into the box to get the luck of a rebound off Ashley before laying back to White to smash home to make it 4-1.

With the number of youthful changes, Teversal will still have left the game with more positives than negatives and the obvious disappointment of such a defeat shouldn’t deflect from the development that is currently being undertaken.

Teversal are again on the road tonight (Tuesday) to face AFC Emley with a 7.45pm kick-off, then on Saturday they entertain Louth Town with a 3pm kick off.
