The Sheffield Wednesday stopper, who began his time at Stags with a string of clean sheets, was clearly in agony as he left the pitch in the first half during Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Newport County.

Mansfield feared the worst, but initial X-rays on Saturday night revealed no structural damage to Kean’s knee.

And this afternoon a scan revealed bone bruising and no serious damage, so the shot stopper is now expected to only be sidelined for around 10 days.

Boss Steve Evans said: “It goes without saying that the medical team are delighted with the prognosis, given what the alternative might have been.

“Bone bruising, I am told, has a different pain threshold for each individual.

“The medical staff will do everything they can to further assess the treatment of the injury, but in many cases such as this, time will be the real healer.”

He added: “Jake demonstrated outstanding bravery in meeting the challenge head-on with the Newport County striker and that save acted as the platform to go forward and get all three points against an opposition who I feel will take points from teams in Sky Bet League Two from now until the end of the season.”
