As Stan Searl’s report notes, Argyle would have been glad to see the back of the Stags having conceded four against them earlier in the season.

The match belonged to two men, Dave Syrett and Mike Carter, the latter taking the man of the match honours.

They were helped by a red card for Brian Bason on 32 m intues and soon afterwards Syrett put Stags in front with a tentative shot which keeper Martin Hodge made a mess of as it made its way into the net. He then added a second seven minutes into the second-half.

Syrett hit the crossbar before then limping off injured, but not before Carter had made it 3-0.

Neville Hamilton got the fourth with his first ever league goal in the 82nd minute, assisted by Carter who then rounded off the win with a superb goal on the break.

Martin New made his home league debut for Stags and made a fine save late on to preserve the scoreline.
