Reports from the match suggest the Stags did not actually play that badly overall but were torn apart down their right hand side by Saddlers winger Lee as they conceded four in each half.

Readman and Anthony were the two Stags right-sided players said to be culpable for allowing Lee to run rampant.

Around 5,000 fans saw Alsop end up with a personal four-goal tally for the home side in what was a Thursday afternoon Division III Northern clash.

Walsall were on a high, having just beaten Arsenal, but reports say this scoreline flattered them on the day.

Star man Lee gave Walsall a sixth minute lead and Alsop followed up with a quickfire hat-trick before Bowman, who had already hit the bar and the post in a fine personal display, finally pulled one back for Mansfield.

Coward (2), Alsop and Lee then struck after the break to pile on the agony.

Johnson also had a goal disallowed for the Stags on a miserable day that was going to get even worse.

They left the Walsall ground in heavy fog at 6pm and by 9.30pm had only got as far as Burton-on-Trent, finally getting back to Mansfield at 12.45 on the Friday morning.

STAGS: Wilson, Anthony, England, Readman, S. Robinson, Slack, Prior, Broome, Johnson, Wannacott, Bowater.
