Teversal let it slip against in-form Hemsworth

Hemsworth arrived to Carnarvon Street with an excellent record of 14 league games without defeat, not what the Tevie boys needed after their heavy defeat at neighbours Clipstone the week before.

But after a busy week with players coming and going a much improved performance was a positive from an entertaining point of view.

The gale force wind blowing across the pitch didn’t deter either side from playing football in the right manner with the balance of the game swinging from end to end.

The early exchanges saw Teversal match the visitors with Staniforth sending a wind-affected free kick that caught the visitors’ defence out, but was only half a yard too far for McGurk to prod home. The home side battled and chased down everything, which appeared to rattle the visitors with them making sure the referee was aware of their dissatisfaction.

Both sides were creating opportunities, but it was the visitors who had the clearest openings when defensive lapses allowed Nick Guest and Jason Yates opportunities that were squandered.

The cost of not taking those opportunities was realised on 35 minutes when Hayward’s pass to Blair was cut out by Blake Vincent, who exploded forward, playing a one-two with Dave Cockerill before composing himself and calmly passing the ball past the advancing Bentley, the finish going in off the far post to nestle in the back of the net.

This appeared to ignite Hemsworth’s fire, who went straight back at the Tevie Boys with a great passing move that saw Connolly with the time and space to pull back from the by-line for Blair to fire in an effort from eight yards out that forced Brooks to make an excellent save.

Before half time Blair cut in off the right flank and evaded a couple of challenges before putting his effort wide of the target.

The protest for a penalty was a little over zealous which left the referee with no option but to award a yellow card to Lee Swift, who could count himself unlucky as a number of his team mates could have received it before him.

The second half continued in the same vain initially, but substitutions and a change in shape by Teversal had an impact they didn’t want - a 60th minute equaliser for the Wells.

Having found Brooks in the Tevie goal in fine form the visitors knew it was going to take something special to beat him, and after another good passing move found Guest on the edge of the area, he unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Hemsworth took control of the game, but the hosts still had plenty to offer the break.

The visitors forced Brooks into a number of routine saves and some desperate last ditch blocks were keeping the home side in the game.

The irony of the game came from the fact the Hemsworth won and Tevie lost the point they deserved when Teversal were hit on the break.

Tobin lost the ball on the edge of the Hemsworth 18 yard box only for it to end up at the feet of Blair ,who darted between McGurk and Staniforth before smashing the winner into the roof of the net past the stranded Brooks with eight minutes plus added-on time to play.

Teversal huffed and puffed but couldn’t find an equaliser with Cockerill coming closest when a low effort forced Bentley to make an excellent save down low to his right.
