Teversal pipped by promotion hopefuls Pontefract

Teversal entertained a Pontefract Collieries side that have aspirations of promotion, and if the visitors keep picking up the three points like they did in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Carnarvon Street, then they will not be far away.

The home side had the better of the possession for the 90 minutes with Ponte looking a threat on the break.

But apart from the one that mattered most, the Tevie Boys would have been up on every statistic that is now produced for football matches.

The early pressure was provided by the home side with Adcock, Pilmore and Dawson having efforts that brought out routine saves from Craig Parry in the Ponte goal.

Credit to the visitors’ back line, they defended excellently throughout the game, which became a key feature.

On 26 minutes Harris thought he had done enough to opening the scoring when he raced beyond Jennings and, with Parry quick off his line, the Tevie wide man rounded the keeper before drilling an effort that looked destined for the back of the net. However, a superb goal line clearance by Adam Robinson saw the full back clear the ball to safety.

Pontefract then had what turned out to be their best attacking spell of the game that led to that all-important goal.

Initially a Hicks corner found the big Mwaebie, who rose above everyone to powerfully head over the bar as the defender failed to control his header.

But on 29 minutes the goal came when an excellent through ball by Hoyle found Marsden’s timely run, allowing him to fire an effort across Dye and, with a slight deflection off Fisher as the Tevie defender tried to block the effort, the ball finished up inside the goal at the base of post and side netting to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Teversal pushed for the equaliser for the remainder of the half, but the resilient Yorkshire side were defending their lead with honour and slowing the game down at every opportunity.

The second half continued in the same vein, but no questions could be asked of the effort from the home side as it looked only a matter of time before the goal would come.

A great opportunity did arrive when Adcock and Cox combined to release Pilmore, who did excellently to hold off Jennings before unleashing a powerful drive that Parry positioned himself superbly to stand up to, then made a timely save going full stretch to his right.

The only effort of note for the visitors came on the hour mark when Rouse calmly placed an effort from 20 yards that had Dye racing across his line, with the ball hitting the face of the bar before being scrambled to safety.

On 61 minutes from a Vincent corner, Dave Cockerill caused mayhem in the Ponte penalty area and, as the ball dropped to Adie Harris, he fired what looked like the equaliser as the effort went through all the bodies in the six yard box only to be denied on the line for the second time, this time Craig Robinson denying the Tevie Boys.

Teversal continued to threaten and had numerous opportunities, but the Ponte defence defended superbly with Parry marshalling his back line superbly.

Arguably the best chance in the dying minutes came when a Langley ball found Dave Cockerill, whose superb first touch created him an opportunity out of nothing. But unfortunately the finish didn’t match the control and again Parry made a routine save to make sure they took the points back to the Urban Sports Stadium.

Next up for the Tevie Boys is a trip to Grimsby Borough tonight (Tuesday, 7.45pm), then on Saturday they travel to Rossington Main for a 3pm kick-off. Both games are Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One fixtures.
