HUCKNALL Town have been handed an easy-looking home tie in their first foray into this season’s Notts FA Senior County Cup.
For they have been pitted against Gedling Miners Welfare, who play two levels below The Yellows, in the East Midland Counties League, and currently sit next to bottom in the table.
Gedling, whose assistant managers are former Nottingham Forest players Bryn Gunn and Calvin Plummer, have won just four of their 20 league matches this term, leaking 61 goals.
Bossed by Andy Muldoon, their squad includes midfielder Junior Harding, who had a spell with Town as a youngster.
The Yellows will be hoping to improve on their deplorable record in the Senior Cup in recent seasons. They haven’t lifted the trophy since 2003, which was their fourth success in six years.
However they did reach the semis last term when beaten 3-2 by Carlton Town, who went on to lose to Eastwood Town in the final. Eastwood, the highest ranked non-league club in the county, have now contested the last six finals, winning five of them.
The rest of the Third Round (last-16) draw is: Arnold Town v Carlton Town, Greenwood Meadows v Dunkirk, Sutton Town v Eastwood Town, Basford United v Rainworth Miners Welfare, Retford United v Wollaton, Newark Town v Bilborough Pelican and Clifton v Thoresby Colliery Welfare. Ties are to be played on Tuesday February 7 or Wednesday February 8.
