A terrific 11/2 winner treated followers of TIP OF THE DAY yesterday. Check out the latest advice from our resident expert for today’s racing.

Friday January 11

COUNSEL

Sedgefield 12.40 WIN

I am pleased to see John Ferguson’s newcomer, Three Kingdoms, taking his chance in this novices’ hurdle. The presence of the former Dermot Weld-trained gelding, who won on the Flat at Galway in September, should help to create an acceptable price for the selection, especially as he receives 10lbs from Donald McCain’s four-year-old. Counsel has failed to live up to the expectations of him as a youngster when he cost 200,000 guineas and was entered in both the Derby and the St Leger for his illustrious former handler, Sir Michael Stoute. But since joining McCain, he’s taken to hurdling most encouragingly and followed a smooth win at Bangor with a respectable effort when upped in class for a warm Grade Two event at Doncaster. Hold-up tactics did not bring out the best in him that day, so expect Jason Maguire to have him handy throughout on this sharp track, where his trainer boasts a superb record.
