Local swimmers prepare for nationals test

Swimmers from all three local clubs start their individual and team campaigns this week as members of the elite Nova Centurion & City of Sheffield squads, at the British Gas ASA National Age Group & Youth Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

The events are the highlight of the national junior swimming calendar, with more than 2,000 swimmers expected to be taking part over five long days of competition, including some straight from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Heats, semi-finals and finals will be contested in six age groups, 11/12 years, 13 years, 14 years, 15/16 years, 17/18 years & 19 years/over and para-swimming races will be contested in multi-classification format with positions ranked by British Disability Points.

In the Age Group event (11/12 years, 13 years, 14 years), as well as individual and relay medals, British Age Group Category (BAGCAT) awards will also be contested.

The ASA have confirmed they will offer free, live video streaming of every session and commentary will be provided by Commonwealth gold medallist Sarah Ruckwood (nee Price) and Chris Wilson.

This year the local clubs are represented in the Age Group competition by Mansfield Swimming Club’s Ben Sharrocks (13) and Rhys Taylor (14), Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club’s Lily Boseley (12), Elliot Clogg (14) and Declan Smith (14) and Sutton Swimming Club’s Neve Fergie (14).

In the youth competition, Sherwood Colliery’s Imogen Gould (18), joins Mansfield’s Oliver Hempsall (19) and Tom Howarth (17).

Sherwood Colliery’s Lily Boseley (pictured) is highlighted by British Swimming as ‘one to watch’ after posting the fastest entry time in her age group in the 100m backstroke.

A full round-up of the swimmers’ progress will be in next week’s Chad, but can be followed, live, at www.swimming.org/asanationals.
